Feelin good anyway

Odd coincidence.  Nina Simone happened to come up in brief discussion last night in relation to a headline item.  First time, probably, she was ever mentioned on this blog.  Turns out it was the anniversary of her death:

Nina Simone, American/Pan-African singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and civil rights activist – died this day in 2003, aged 70, after years of battling breast cancer…

  1. The kirtan band I’m in almost managed to turn her Feeling Good into kirtan. Then, during some cable station’s broadcasting of the NBA a weight loss commercial came on with some American Idol winner singing it. It seems that Nina just has this way of making us sick in such a great way. Your dialogue with Fuster was perfect. The song itself speaks to ambivalence. It’s like she’s watched a lynching the day before but has to get up and if you’re going to get up you might as well feel good about it, but then sometime you’ll also have to hear some weight-loss ad with the song being sung by an American Idol with a great voice that just makes you want to never hear the birds sing ever again because it’s all just so weight loss commercial.
