If things ever reach the point that this little treehouse is in danger of coming down, I’ll give you plenty of warning. So, about that donate link I’d stuck in the sidebar: Please try to think of it less as a desperate cry for help than as a reminder from me to myself to get to the business of “monetizing” my internet work.
Or don’t… Think whatever you like. Either way, the “widget” is gone now, but some version of it may soon return. Or it may be replaced with or joined by ads – whether from commercial ad-servers, one or another affiliate program, or partial integration with my businesses – with a view to future synergies and also experience-gathering in setting up that kind of thing.
Serendipitously enough, some developers in the Open Source world have just released a complex “plug-in,” finally out of Beta this very day after many months, that lets people (like me) who operate OSCommerce stores port all or some of their functionality directly into WordPress “pages.” So, in addition to money links in the sidebar, there may soon be a gift shop here, selling collectibles and who knows what else. May or may not lead to some cross-traffic – or I may be able to use it for other purposes.
Everything has the potential to turn into almost anything else, or to be revealed to have been something else all along, in this best of all possible worlds.
Still thinking it all over, since I’d expected to be writing a very different post just around now, among other things looking to a tight shooting schedule, with myself in a central role in the production, beginning about a week from now. Not sure if it’s too early for me to start waxing philosophical about how things are better this way, but obviously things will be different.
I will say, however, that when I started re-designing the blog, what had finally gotten me going on it was something, a certain disappointment against a changing story background, that I not only could or should have taken as foreshadowing, but unconsciously already was taking as a warning. I’m just glad I hadn’t started spending the remaining production budget and other expected money before the funds were deposited, despite having been very sorely tempted to jump that particular gun.
one is fucking left with no fucking other than
