Once one dismisses the rest of all possible worlds…

If things ever reach the point that this little treehouse is in danger of coming down, I’ll give you plenty of warning. So, about that donate link I’d stuck in the sidebar: Please try to think of it less as a desperate cry for help than as a reminder from me to myself to get to the business of “monetizing” my internet work.

Or don’t… Think whatever you like.  Either way, the “widget” is gone now, but some version of it may soon return. Or it may be replaced with or joined by ads – whether from commercial ad-servers, one or another affiliate program, or partial integration with my businesses – with a view to future synergies and also experience-gathering in setting up that kind of thing.

Serendipitously enough, some developers in the Open Source world have just released a complex “plug-in,” finally out of Beta this very day after many months, that lets people (like me) who operate OSCommerce stores port all or some of their functionality directly into WordPress “pages.” So, in addition to money links in the sidebar, there may soon be a gift shop here, selling collectibles and who knows what else. May or may not lead to some cross-traffic – or I may be able to use it for other purposes.

Everything has the potential to turn into almost anything else, or to be revealed to have been something else all along, in this best of all possible worlds.

Still thinking it all over, since I’d expected to be writing a very different post just around now, among other things looking to a tight shooting schedule, with myself in a central role in the production, beginning about a week from now. Not sure if it’s too early for me to start waxing philosophical about how things are better this way, but obviously things will be different.

I will say, however, that when I started re-designing the blog, what had finally gotten me going on it was something, a certain disappointment against a changing story background, that I not only could or should have taken as foreshadowing, but unconsciously already was taking as a warning. I’m just glad I hadn’t started spending the remaining production budget and other expected money before the funds were deposited, despite having been very sorely tempted to jump that particular gun.

  1. If I were at my regular computer today, I would type out the part in OTTO about how even if you were given limitless funds, a giant military, and everything else imaginable it wouldn’t…what was it that it wouldn’t do? Decrease the size of your problems was it? I don’t remember. I think it was the set up for you (as Otto) having out of the ballpark, astro size problems no matter what. Was that it?

    • Sphinxter: I think it was the set up for you (as Otto) having out of the ballpark, astro size problems no matter what. Was that it?

That sequence was one that you did a nice cartoon on – think you still have the original around? I probably have copies you gave me… in a box under a stack of boxes somewhere.

We could shoot your version now – assuming you still have access to a sock.

    • Actually, just located a 1999 draft with the original photo-graphics mostly intact even after file conversion.

Were you aware that OTTO destroyed (revealed the impossibility, doomedness of) my relationship with Katerina? In her view, she thought she had invited (more like pushed) a screenwriter with a future to move into her fabulous house with her, but then she read OTTO, and realized that my idea of a screenplay was some weird thing with diagrams of a car engine.

I had already pretty much moved out of my apartment – OTTO’s main setting – but, by the time I moved in with her, I or we (me and OTTO and Buddy) were already moving back out again.

  2. CK–I do have the Otto drawing, yes. And you’re right, the sock version of Otto would be perfect for what you can do with the camera, with all kinds of text and everything. I can totally see it and no one can kick you out of your house now for realizing a great artistic vision. You could get kicked out for other reasons, but not that one. Plus, Laura really good at sewing so we could enlist her help with the sock creation. Unless you think it’s better to just make the sock super sad and pathetic looking like we had it before. I don’t think it even had eyes. I think it was just a sock.

    • Didn’t you/Otto/me draw a face in the sock?

Probably what we should do is publish pieces here, including your cartoons, as well as pre-/post-cinematic psuedo-realizations, so that the other dudes have some better idea of what we’re talking about. Plus we can flub it a bunch of times, spreading even greater joy to frogs and bobs.

Doin’ the whole thing cartoon-sock style would be challenging, to say the least. You may have forgotten how much of it turns on dialogue, interaction, and setting – and lotsa lotsa sex. The whole last chapter is a verbal celebration of sexual climax, mainly by the female lead – was just restoring some stuff that for some reason I decided in 1999 was embarrassingly excessive.

Tho we could do it anyway, by whatever minimalist/poor cinema means, until someone with too much money wanders by and sez he wants to finance it with x/y/z young actors.

      • I was thinking we would do it live action with a sock since you have the camera. We’d film the sock with the script collaged into it, etc to create the coolness. I could make the background paintings. You’re right about me forgetting about all the sex. That would be funny with socks. Although it’s not a really lucky time for Sox right now. That could change. When the Yanks were being disrespected a month or so ago, I thought that was a mistake and now I think it would be a mistake to count the Sox out. Beckett can still pitch. Sorry Phrog, but I’d rather face CC than Beckett in a first and-or last game of a series.

  3. What if in this version of Otto, instead of all the 3rd Act sex, we make Otto a yoga teacher? He could fake being all positive and his life could change around until he gets lost in the laundry.
