It’s just a movie poster, for a movie I don’t recall anyone ever having had much to say about, but the image always stuck in my mind, and today it seems especially sad and expressive.
The concept of the movie played off and heightened a common rescue fantasy – the kind of fantasy in fact that sometimes captures the minds of stalkers, possibly some of the same people that a real bodyguard would be expected to keep away. Viewed today, the poster image ironically conveys a sense of tragedy, or of doom, that is utterly, monochromatically, the opposite of the gaudy pleasures of pop music. We single out and celebrate people like Whitney Houston, shower them with rewards and attention, and it seems that in the process we often make their lives somewhat unlivable. It’s a kind of martyrdom we arrange for them.
